What Is Sudoku?

Sudoku is a number placement puzzle played on a 9x9 grid. The grid is split into nine 3x3 boxes. Some cells already have numbers in them. Your job is to fill in the rest so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. No repeats in any row, column, or box.

You do not need to be good at math. Sudoku is pure logic. You look at what numbers are missing, figure out where they can go, and place them one at a time. Beginners start with easy puzzles that have many given numbers. Experts tackle grids with very few givens and need advanced techniques like naked pairs, X-wing, and swordfish to crack them.

The puzzle first appeared in a U.S. magazine in 1979 under the name “Number Place.” A Japanese publisher picked it up in 1984 and gave it the name Sudoku, which means “single number.” By 2005, Sudoku had spread to newspapers around the world. Today, millions of people solve Sudoku puzzles every day on paper, in books, and on their phones.

Why People Solve Sudoku

Research shows that puzzle-solving keeps your brain active. Sudoku works the parts of your mind that handle logic, pattern recognition, and short-term memory. A 2019 study from the University of Exeter found that adults who regularly solve word and number puzzles have sharper cognitive function than those who do not. Sudoku does not prevent memory loss, but it does give your brain a daily workout.

Beyond brain health, Sudoku is a stress reducer. Solving a grid forces you to focus on one task. Your phone notifications, your to-do list, and your worries all fade into the background while you work through the logic. Many solvers describe it as a form of meditation. You sit down, pick up a pencil, and the world gets quiet for a few minutes.

Sudoku is also a great screen-free hobby. Our printed books and printable puzzles let you unplug and solve with nothing but paper and pencil. No battery, no Wi-Fi, no distractions. Just you and the grid.
