Sudoku Difficulty Levels Explained

How Difficulty Is Measured

Sudoku difficulty depends on two things: how many given numbers the puzzle starts with, and which solving techniques are needed to complete it. A puzzle with 40 givens that requires only naked singles is easy. A puzzle with 21 givens that needs X-wing and swordfish is expert.

Easy (36 to 45 Givens)

Easy puzzles hand you most of the numbers. You can solve them by scanning rows, columns, and boxes for naked singles. No pencil marks needed. These are perfect for beginners, kids, and anyone who wants a quick, relaxing solve. Most people finish an easy puzzle in three to eight minutes.

Medium (27 to 35 Givens)

Medium puzzles require pencil marks and basic elimination. You will encounter hidden singles and may need naked pairs to break through sticking points. Medium is where most daily solvers live. It is challenging enough to be interesting but not so hard that it becomes frustrating. Solve times range from eight to twenty minutes.

Hard (22 to 26 Givens)

Hard puzzles demand intermediate techniques. Naked pairs, hidden pairs, pointing pairs, and box-line reduction all come into play. You need to think a few moves ahead. Incorrect pencil marks can send you down a wrong path, so accuracy matters. Experienced solvers finish hard puzzles in fifteen to thirty minutes.

Expert (17 to 21 Givens)

Expert puzzles are the real test. With as few as 17 givens (the minimum for a valid Sudoku), these grids require advanced techniques like X-wing, swordfish, XY-wing, and sometimes coloring or chains. Expert puzzles can take thirty minutes to over an hour. They are designed for solvers who have mastered all the basic and intermediate techniques.

Which Level Should You Play?

Start at the level where you can finish most puzzles without getting stuck for more than a minute. If easy bores you, move up. If hard frustrates you, drop down. There is no shame in any level. The goal is to enjoy the process and improve over time.
